Sutter's Fort State Historic Park, set up in 1839 by the German-Swiss immigrant Johann August Sutter, is located on the former site of the first outpost of the white man in California. The adobe houses relics of the pioneering and gold-rush period.
Boasting an impressive assortment of California art as well as East Asian and European Art and photography pieces, the Crocker Art Museum is an excellent place to visit for art lovers. The California and American art in the museum includes exhibits dating back to 1848 with pieces from Daguerreotypes to Ansel Adams photos. The exhibits also include paintings that range from early 19th Century to the present time.
