An excellent place to visit for history buffs, Boot Hill Museum boasts more than 60,000 artifacts from the Old West era. Many of these exhibits were collected by Chalkley Beeson, who was the former sheriff and part-owned of the famous Long Branch Saloon. An audiovisual program in Boot Hill Museum simulates the feel of a buffalo stampede that happened in the days when those animals roamed here in huge herds. During summers, Boot Hill Museum organizes dinners, various shows, and mock gunfights.
If the travelers visit the city in summers, they can enjoy the one-hour trolley tour that provides an overview of the area. Riders will explore the Fort Dodge, which now serves as the Kansas Soldiers Home, and the location of the original Long Branch Saloon.
Also named as the "Home of Stone", Mueller-Schmidt House is an 1881 limestone house built for the family of boot maker John Mueller. Mueller sold it to the Schmidt family after the 1886 blizzard. Schmidt lived in this house until 1965 and sold it to Ford County for use as a museum. The tour of Mueller-Schmidt House is available from Memorial Day to Labor Day and is filled with period furniture and clothing.
A walking tour of the Old Dodge City historic district, Dodge City Trail of Fame includes sidewalk medallions commemorating famed Dodge Citians, fictional and real. The highlight of the tour is a 8-foot statue of lawman Wyatt Earp.
