The capital and port of the island of Lesbos, Mytilene is an ancient city founded in the 11th century BC. The city is built on the southeast edge on the island and is also a seat of the metropolitan bishop of the Orthodoz Church. Mytilene is among the oldest cities around the globe and its rich past can explored through visiting the museum, fortress, and several other imposing ancient sites located in the city. Tourists can also enjoy shopping in the main bazaar and can visit the fish market offering sardines, octopus, and mullet.
Places of Interest in Mytilene
Archaeological Museum
Housed in a neoclassical mansion, Archaeological Museum is located at the corner of the 8th Novembriou and Argiri Eftalioti Streets. The museum puts on display the impressive finds from Neolithic and Melinas Merkouri times, such as somersaulting female figurines, gold jewelry, and mosaic floor from a Roman villa.
Mytilene Fortress
Standing on a small hill, Mytilene fortress is the highest point on the peninsula. The foundation of the fortress was laid at the time of Justianian. The most important monuments to explore in the fortress are the central western tower, the Kule Mosque, a Gunpowder storeroom, the Ottoman Gate, an Islamic monastery, the Cistern, a fountain, and a bathhouse.
Church of Agios Therapon
Built by the local architect Argyris Adalis, Church of Agios Therapon is an apt spot for spiritual travelers and architecture admirers. The central dome of this church is one of the landmarks of the city and can be seen from far away. The exterior decoration of the church is the work of Nikolaous Kesanlis, who was a local painter and sculptor.
