La Rochelle Vacation Packages: Affordable and Exciting Adventures Await!

La Rochelle is a French city and a seaport on the Bay of Biscay in Atlantic Ocean. It is the capital of the Charente-Maritime department and is also known as ‘La ville blanche’ (the white city) and ‘Porte Océane’ (ocean gate). It has beautifully maintained its past and architecture, and that makes this French city one of the most picturesque and historically rich on the Atlantic coast. Talking of history, this one thousand year old city has been a prominent seaport during the Medieval period and a glimpse of its golden days can be found in the Old Town which is resplendent with medieval fortifications, walkways, wooden houses and some lighthouses.
Places of Interest in La Rochelle
Vieux Port (The Old Port)
As the oldest and most picturesque part of the city, the Vieux Port is where you can touch a glorious part of French history. More than half of the buildings here are hundreds of years old and still look in the prime of their perfection- an effect that is topped by their pale yellow color to yield a Mediterranean feel. Also of note here are the three defensive towers (Tour St. Nicolas, Tour de la Chaine and Tour de la Lanterne) that once used to guard the harbor against the British forces.
Musee d'Orbigny-Bernon (The Orbigny-Bernon Museum)
Founded in 1917, Musee d'Orbigny-Bernon is a history museum in La Rochelle. It has an extensive collection of porcelain and Far Eastern art, along with a stellar collection of various collectibles belonging to the French diplomat Baron Charles de Chassiron. Other notable artifacts here include the Japanese artifacts of the Chassiron collection, Japanese print of the Chassiron collection and a French armored car which was involved in the Allied siege of La Rochelle in 1945.
La Rochelle Aquarium
One of the biggest aquariums in Europe, the La Rochelle Aquarium is home to more than 10,000 marine species from the Atlantic Ocean, Indo-Pacific, Mediterranean Sea and the Caribbean. Taking a tour of this aqueous wonder would take about three hours. You can also avail audio guide tours inside this aquarium in your preferred language.
