Rhode Island is a state in the New England region of the United States and its capital is Providence. It is also called the ‘Ocean State’ because it has several large bays and inlets that render it over 400 miles of coastline and powdery white sandy beaches. This paradisiacal display of exquisiteness is notwithstanding several scenic coves, seaside cliffs, old lighthouses, colonial villages, lordly mansions and elaborate museums. A stellar attribute to Rhode Island’s fame is the presence of two mutually contrasting cities, Providence and Newport. While the former entertains an old corporate appearance, the latter has a feel of that traditional 18th century America.
Rough Point is one of the finest examples of Gilded Age (1870s-1900s) English Manorial style mansions overlooking the Atlantic Ocean in Rhode Island. It is situated in Newport and is existent as a remarkable museum. Its last owner was Doris Duke, who was lady of posh elegance and aristocratic tastes, and had a glorious collection of artworks and antiques. You should take out time to appreciate the classic art holdings, medieval tapestries, period furniture of French emperors, Ming dynasty ceramics and paintings by Renoir and Van Dyck.
Cliff Walk is the name of a 3.5-mile long, number two attraction in Newport. It is situated scenically along the shore line and runs to include several prominent gilded mansions like Rough Point, Astor's Beechwood, Rosecliff, Marble House, The Breakers and Ochre Court. An evening spent here would offer you a enthralling landscape consisting of natural scenery, tunnels, long winding pathways that can be topped with a walk down the unpaved section along a picturesque rocky shoreline nearby.
The Breakers is Newport's gaudiest and most famous Gilded Age mansion. The Italian Renaissance structure was built by the noted American socialite and business magnate Vanderbilt as his summer cottage. This late 19th century mansion has 70 rooms that are hallmarked by a grand three story dining room built from imported French and Italian marbles. Other standard accessories like ceiling paintings, mosaics, marble columns, fine wood paneling, and carved stucco too second the ultra-lavish treatment as desired by the business tycoon.
