Places of Interest in Sitka
Sitka National Historical Park
Spread in an area of 113 acres, Sitka National Historical Park is known among tourists for its picturesque beauty and an interesting history. The park preserves the site where the Tlingits were defeated by the Russians in 1804. It is the oldest federally designated park in the state. In the park, there are Russian and indigenous artifacts on display along with a video in the theater providing an overview of the battle.
Sitka Historical Museum
Formerly known as the Isabel Miller Museum, Sitka Historical Museum is the city museum run by the Sitka Historical Society. The museum is located in the Harrigan Centennial Hall. The collection at Sitka Historical Museum focuses on city's past from the Tlingits through the European explorations and Russian period and after.
St. Michael's Cathedral
A cathedral of the Orthodoz Church in America Diocese of Alaska, St. Michael's Cathedral is located at Lincoln and Matsoutoff Streets in Sitka. It is the earliest Orthodox cathedral in the New World. This church is the prominent representative of 19th century Russian cultural influence in North America. St. Michael's Cathedral is now open to the public as a National Historic Landmark.
