The site was turned into torture, interrogation, and execution center by the Khmer Rouge regime. The classrooms were divided into tiny cells. At present, it is a museum that also displays 6000 haunting portraits of the prisoners for visitors to sense the recent tragic history of Cambodia. Visit to this museum is an intense experience and offers visitors plenty of food for thought.
Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda
Set adjacent to each other, Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda spans 174870 square meters of greenery and fascinating Khmer architecture. The king of Cambodia still resides in The Royal Palace. Visitors can explore a number of buildings within the palace that includes Moonlight Pavilion and the Throne Hall. The entrance to the Silver Pagoda is free of cast and tourists can visit the Emerald Buddha dating back to the 17th century.
Independence Monument
An iconic landmark located in the heart of the city, Independence Monument is locally known as Vimean Ekareach. This monument signifies Cambodia's liberation from French. Vivacious celebrations of national festivals such as Independence Day (9th November) and Constitution Day (24th September) are held here. Best time to visit Independence Monument is at night.
National Museum of Cambodia
Largest archeological and cultural history museum in Cambodia, National Museum of Cambodia enables visitors to have a look into the cultural side of Cambodian history that dates back to the 4th century. This museum is located within an imposing red sandstone structure. There are more than 14000 interesting exhibits arranged according to pre-Angkor, Angkor, post-Angkor, and prehistoric eras.
