The capital and largest city of Mozambique, Maputo is a beautiful port city also known as the 'City of Acacias' due to the acacia trees commonly found in the region. The city is encircled by Maputo Province and manufactures pottery, cotton, shoes, furniture, and rubber. Maputo is well known for its Mediterranean-style architecture, wild avenues, and waterside setting. It is one of the most attractive capitals in Africa. The city remains filled with a wide array of hotels, restaurants, supermarkets, sidewalk cafes, and a vibrant cultural scene.
Places of Interest in Maputo
Train Station
One of the most imposing buildings in the city, Train Station is a landmark station of Maputo. The dome of the station was designed by an associate of Gustav Eiffel, who designed Eiffel Tower. Other impressive parts of the station are the wrought-iron lattice work and verandas that grace the pistachio-green exterior. In the station there is a small exhibition of works of visiting as well local artists.
Natural History Museum
Located near Hotel Cardoso, Natural History Museum offers visitors opportunity to see its imposing Manueline architecture and its verdant garden with a mural by Malangatana. The museum features a small ethnography exhibit, some taxidermy specimen, and a mesmerizing display of the collection of elephant foetuses.
Central Market
Housed in a beautiful old building, Central Market is a hub of activity where visitors can buy numerous sorts of goods from an array of seafood, fruit and vegetables, household items, to basket ware, handicrafts, and carvings. Though it is basically a food market, tourists can buy souvenirs and trinkets as well.
