Denpasar is the capital of Bali. It doubles up as the touchdown point to
the island and the center of all tourism and shopping in the island nation.
Denpasar is divided into four districts called North, East, West and South
that are named as per cardinal directions. The city is home to a remarkable
number of ancient temples, architecturally-sound royal palaces and
interesting museums and art galleries. A star attraction in the Denpasar is
a huge four-faced, eight-armed statue called Catur Mukha that sits in the
geographical center of the city. This statue is dedicated to Hindu deity
Lord Brahma and offers orientation to the city.
Things to do in Denpasar
Museum Negeri Propinsi Bali (Bali Museum)
Opened in 1919, the Bali Museum presents a comprehensive view of Balinese
history from prehistoric times to the present. The museum flaunts the very
best of traditional Balinese architecture and features a remarkable
collection of ancient stone, textiles and bronze and wooden artifacts.
Pesta Kesenian Bali (Bali Art Festival)
Celebrated in mid-June, the Bali Art Festival is a month-long traditional
Balinese cultural festival featuring daily dance performances and
handicraft exhibitions. Visitors are treated to a full view of the island
nation’s village dances, food and offering contests, classical palace
dances, Balinese theatre, and dance and music performances.
Pura Jagatnatha, built in 1953, is a religious temple dedicated to the
supreme god named Sanghyang Widi. The temple is special because unlike all
traditional Balinese temples that recognize many deities, this temple has
only one and this makes a bold statement of monotheism. The temple’s shrine
is a classical work of white corals and features an empty throne placed
above a turtle and two mythical snakelike creatures.
