Michael Harris · Apr 22, 2026Beijing is the capital of the People's Republic of China. Located in northern China, it is the world's second most populous city proper and most populous capital city. The Chinese megacity is a direct derivative of the country’s 3000-year-old history, traditional architecture, and formidable martial might. The most important attraction in Beijing is a part of the Great Wall of China that runs through the city. Some traditional architectural and historical highlights here are the Forbidden City complex, the imperial Palace, the Tiananmen Square and the National Museum of China.
Things to do in Beijing
Great Wall of China
The Great Wall of China is a 13171-mile-long wall standing from east to west and featuring series of fortifications made of stone, brick, tamped earth, and wood along the northern borders of China. It was built to protect the Chinese empires against the foreign invasions. A part of that is present in Beijing. Several walls were being built as early as the 7th century BC.
Forbidden City
Constructed from 1406 to 1420, the Forbidden City is a royal palace and complex in Beijing. It has hosted the royal residence from the ruling dynasties from 1420 to 1912 AD. it is called the Forbidden City because no citizens could go inside it. This palatial building now hosts the Palace Museum.
Summer Palace
Originally an imperial garden, the Summer Palace is a large group of lakes, gardens and palaces in Beijing. It offers panoramic views of the Longevity Hill and Kunming Lake, and is encloses many ornate halls and pavilions.
