  • Make a visit to the Mount Hakodate at night. These views are counted among one of three best views in entire world. The route to the mountain is excellent for hiking but there is also ropeway service.
  • Built in 1864, the Fort Goryokaku was the first western-style fort in Japan. The star-shaped massive architecture was built to strengthen city’s defense but didn’t see any action. Inside the fort there is a large park dotted with many charming cherries.
  • Quite strange, the Foreigners' Cemetery has not only graves of who’s who in Japan but also features graves of sailors, clergy and others who died away from their native country. While roaming you will find many English, Russian and French inscriptions.
  • The Hakodate City Museum of Northern Peoples is an excellent place to learn about the Ainu people and their lifestyle and culture. Some exhibits have English displays.
