The park derives its name from the Great Basin, which is a mountainous area between the Wasatch Mountains and Sierra Nevada. There are 100 species of conifer trees and more than 800 species of plants in the park and the neighboring valleys. The fauna species in the park include 61 species of mammals, 238 species of birds, 8 species of fish, 18 species of mammals, and 2 species of amphibians.
