Daniel Brown · Apr 22, 2026The Citadel is a great place for those who love to see the archaeological sites. The excavations here have revealed plenty of Roman, Byzantine, and early Islamic remains. Sitting on the hill, the Citadel is not only a great place to learn about the rich history of the city but also to capture some stunning views of the surrounding area. Some of the prominent sites of interest at Citadel include the Jordanian Archaeological Museum (for collection of artifacts starting from the Paleaolithic Period), the Umayyad Palace (a complex dating from 720-750 AD), the Temple of Hercules (constructed during the reign of Emperor Marcus Aurelius), and the Byzantine Church (for remarkable Corinthian columns).
Established in the year 1971, the Jordanian Museum of Popular Traditions is situated in the eastern section of the Roman Theatre of Amman. The museum aims at collecting, protecting, preserving, & presenting the Jordanian and Palestinian folk heritage from all over Jordan. The museum comprises 5 exhibition halls. First is dedicated to traditional costumes of the East Bank. Second is reserved for showcasing traditional jewellery and cosmetic items of the various regions in the East and West Banks. Third is home to a collection of Palestinian costumes and heard-dresses. Displayed in fourth are potteries, wooden cooking pots, & food preparation vessels, along with a collection of silver jewellery and bridal dresses from the West Bank. A collection of mosaics from Byzantine churches in Jerash and Madaba have been exhibited in the fifth hall.
The King Abdullah Mosque was built by the late King Hussein in the memory of his grandfather around 1989. This mosque can house nearly 7000 worshipers inside and approximately 3000 in its courtyard. The mosque has a separate section for women, which can accommodate around 500 worshipers. The octagonal prayer hall is covered by blue dome which is beautifully decorated with Quranic inscriptions. The best thing about the mosque is that within Amman it is the only mosque where non-Muslim visitors are equally welcomed.
The Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts is a beautiful place where one can appreciate impressive contemporary Jordanian paintings, sculpture and pottery. The highlight of the gallery includes contemporary art from the Middle East and the greater Muslim world. Several temporary exhibitions are also organized here. These exhibitions introduce visitors to the world of Islamic Art.
