Air Tanzania
Based in Dar es Salaam, Air Tanzania was the national airline of Tanzania. The airline had its main base at Julius Nyerere International Airport, Dar es Salaam. Air Tanzania Corporation was established on 10 March 1977 following the breakup of East African Airways. Flights were started from Dar-es-Salaam using Boeing 737-200s and Fokker F27s. In February 2002, the government began the process of privatizing Air Tanzania Corporation and selected South African Airways as a winning bidder. In December 2002, South African Airways entered an agreement purchasing a 49% stake in ATC. The new airline Air Tanzania Company Limited (ATCL) was launched on 31 March 2003. It offered direct flights between Johannesburg and Dar Es Salaam, but also to Zanzibar and Kilimanjaro.
On 31 March 2006, the Government announced that it would dispose of Air Tanzania Company Limited (ATCL) and bought back the 49% stake in ATCL. Air Tanzania was re-launched in September 2007 and made its inaugural flights starting October 1, 2007, on the Dar es Salaam to Mwanza via Kilimanjaro route. However, in December 2008, the Tanzanian Civil Aviation Authority, (TCAA) withdrew the airworthiness certificates for all Air Tanzania aircraft and grounded the airline for unspecified safety and maintenance violations.
