Qantas Airlines claims faulty engine design and material failure is the cause of an engine blowout on one of its Airbus A380 superjumbos. The airline said Friday that pieces from the engine had shot through the plane’s wing.
CEO of Qantas, Alan Joyce, said it was too soon to say exactly what had forced one of the planes four Rolls-Royce engines to fail shortly after takeoff from Singapore on Thursday and that a detailed investigation was in the works.
According to Joyce, maintenance, which the airline is responsible for – did not seem to be a vital factor.
The plane suffered an engine blowout just after taking off from Singapore. As a result it shot flames and shredded metal over an island of Indonesia but landed safely in Singapore after emptying its fuel.
