Chennai’s nightlife scene takes place mostly in the city’s large luxury hotels. This is where Chennai’s young, affluent set (and tourists) frequently go to dance the night away in an upscale nightclubs or sip on specialty cocktails in chic bars. If you happen to find yourself in Chennai for an evening, here are some tips for making the most of it.
Getting Around
Consider taking a night bus or metro to your destination (it’s cheaper). However, it’s usually best to plan on taking a cab or rickshaw back to your hotel at the end of the evening (public transportation tends to shut down around midnight). A word of advice on cabs: professional cabs in Chennai are black, yellow and green.
However, there are lots of non-official taxis with drivers who take advantage of tourists (they will often drive you all over the city or take you to a store they are in cahoots with and attempt to sell you souvenirs). Even in professional taxis, it’s a good idea to agree on the price at the beginning of the ride to avoid any monetary surprises when you arrive. Auto rickshaws are usually cheaper than taxis and are a great option for short trips within the city. They can accommodate up to three people and are black yellow and green (like the official taxis). Rickshaw drivers are notorious for haggling, so it’s also best to agree on a set rate before hopping in.
