United and Continental airlines, in the midst of merging into one carrier, are working on a plan to avoid furloughs for United cabin crew.
The airlines’ crew members are represented by two different unions and currently do not work on each other’s flights.
However, United currently has too many workers and Continental will have too few when it adds new planes to its fleet next year.
The airlines’ parent company has asked its employees to come up with a crossover hiring program so United workers can join the Continental force in lieu of taking voluntary or involuntary furloughs.
