US airlines are expecting to carry a record number of international travelers between June and August this year, topping last summer’s record of 25.8 million international passengers, according the Air Transport Association.
The association, which represents major US carriers like American Airlines and Delta, says US carriers will transport 26.3 international passengers, a 1.5 percent rise from 2010.
The optimistic forecast comes despite as relatively high unemployment rate and uncertainty surrounding fuel prices heading into peak summer travel season.
The association’s chief economist, John Heimlich, noted that both business and leisure travel levels have remained high despite lingering effects of the global recession.
