The Republican-controlled US House of Representatives introduced legislation late last week that would block the government’s request for $76 million to purchase an additional 275 full body airport scanners.
Republican house members stressed that the move was driven only by budget concerns and that the controversy surrounding the scanners did not weigh heavily on their minds.
However, many representatives took the opportunity to voice opposition to the scanners outright, questioning their effectiveness in making air travel safer for Americans.
The move will not affect the 500 scanners currently installed nationwide nor the 500 additional machines recently approved by Congress.
