Qantas Airways’ Pilots Union Authorizes Strike Action, Seeks Negotiations

This blog post was updated on August 2, 2021.

The union representing Qantas Airways’ long-haul pilots has approved two full days of strike action in the lead-up to a major restructuring of the airline’s international operations.

Qantas airways is expected to announce a major shake-up of its international operations on August 24.

The carrier is looking for ways to cut costs on certain international routes that are currently hemorrhaging money. That has Qantas pilots concerned over issues of job security.

The pilots’ union hopes to negotiate with Qantas management before the announcement and insists that strike action will be used only as a last resort.

“We’re very conscious of disrupting the travelling public; we don’t intend to do that…We’d rather have the management negotiate,” union vice president Richard Woodward said.
