The Magellan Birdwing butterfly is as fascinating as it is physically stunning. Here’s what you need to know about this delicate, dazzling Philippine native.
Natural habitat: Throughout the Philippines and on Taiwan’s Orchid Island.
Protection status: Protected
Size: On average, male wingspans measure six to seven inches across and females can measure up to 10 inches across.


Diet:
nectar from a range of plants and flowers

 

Fun facts: This butterfly is named for the first circumnavigator, Ferdinand Magellan, who was killed in the Philippines in 1521.

 

All that glitters isn’t really gold. The Magellan’s rear wings change into a green or blue color at an angle.
