Mississippi is a state in the United States and its capital is Jackson. It derives its name from a Native American term ‘Mici Zibi’ (meaning ‘Great River’) because of its geographical association with its namesake river. The American state is a delightful sum of mansions, estates and historical monuments contested by a spread of mountains, forests, coastal areas and farmlands. No matter where you head to in Mississippi, you wouldn’t feel short of its traditional DNA that revolves around an eclectic range of cuisines, music, and literature. It is also associated with some of the most famous stars on silver screen including Elvis Presley, Oprah Winfrey and Morgan Freeman.
Gulf Islands National Seashore is a scenic sum of wetlands, beaches and seven off-shore barrier islands that together can quickly turn a lovely weekend into unforgettable. This delightful sum of recreational opportunities is set across a stunning backdrop of natural and historic resources running along the Gulf of Mexico. Other attractions here include sparkling white quartz sand beaches, historic fortifications, nature trails, wildlife sanctuaries, islands, nature trails, picnic areas, and campgrounds.
The Old Mississippi State Capitol in Jackson has served as the Mississippi statehouse from 1839 until 1903. It is proudly associated with the passing of some of the significant laws in the history of the United States, including Passage of the Ordinance of Secession (1861), Constitutional Convention recognizing African American political rights (1868) and Restoration of White Rule (1875). This grand Greek Revival superstructure was subsequently turned into a museum in 1961 after the construction of a newer State Capitol in the city.
The Elvis Presley Birthplace is a historic museum dedicated to the noted American musician Elvis Presley. It includes the birthplace home of Elvis Presley, a museum, a chapel, and a nearby church. When Elvis was young, his family had run out of finances and was defaulting on payments when they decided to leave this home.
Vicksburg offered a direct access to the Mississippi River and its capture by Union forces had grossly tilted the odds in Abraham Lincoln’s favor in the Civil War in 1863. Visitors can take a 16-mile driving tour here that passes through the historic hotspots related to the battle scenarios and key events of that historic battle. Over 1300 monuments, markers and reconstructed trenches can be seen here during a 90 minutes tour- and you can top this experience by paying a visit to Vicksburg cemetery.
