Much unlike its first name, the American state of North Carolina is an atypical southern delight that wows its visitors with its tri-regional identity comprising of coastal plains, foothills and mountains. You can spend a week hiking and mountain climbing, another while immersing yourself in Appalachian music and still another exploring local museums and historic neighborhoods. This fascinating series of incredible excitement can be furthered by some exhilarating hours of kite-surfing, fishing and offshore sunbathing at barrier islands in the Outer Banks and the bustling beach-side city of Wilmington. Other attractions here include outdoor activities like ferry rides, museums, theme-based parks, skiing and tubing. Whichever way you go from here, North Carolina would continue to tempt you with its delectable cuisines and pulsating nightlife throughout the year.
Built in 1895, the Biltmore Estate in Asheville (North Carolina) is the largest private home in the United States. This grand mansion consists of 250 rooms and they are all dotted with remarkable artworks, antiques and architecture. It wows its visitors with its elegant Chateauesque-style of architecture and is considered one of the enduring signatures of the Gilded Age (1870s-1900s) in the country. Also worth noting is that the mansion had running supply of electricity ever since it was built, and it also had six separate sections divided by brick fire walls to safeguard its superstructure from any mishap.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park is an International Biosphere Reserve that lies between Tennessee and North Carolina. A tourist magnet, it attracts a large number of visitors because of its enormous span and year-round accessibility. Almost 95% of it is forested and is home to nearly 100 different types of native trees, over 1400 flowering plant species and 4000 non-flowering plants. The same distinction rings true for its abundant wildlife, bird species, fish and reptiles.
The most decorated American battleship of Second World War, the USS North Carolina (or the BB-55) was the lead ship of North Carolina-class battleships. She was commissioned to serve during the war and took part in every major naval offensive in the Pacific Theater of Operations, especially to thwart advances of the Imperial Japanese naval forces. She was later decommissioned and turned into a museum that can be visited to tour its interiors and to catch a glimpse of how it had once bore the glory of US Naval Forces. The ship’s interiors include sailor's and officer's quarters, and a display of its immense firepower.
