Roller coasters can also be a good reason to travel, especially if you want to experience some of the biggest, fastest and tallest in the world. Here are some truly hair-raising, scream inducing roller coasters to seek out on the planet.
Top Thrill Dragster – Ohio

Featured at Cedar Point amusement park in Sandusky, Ohio, Top Thrill Dragster may only be 17 seconds long, but its height certainly makes it one of the world’s tallest. While the roller coaster no longer holds the record for being the tallest and fastest in the world, it does still reach a terrifying height of 420 feet. Riders jump on board and them promptly go from 0 to 120mph in less than 4 seconds. This racecar themed roller coaster truly takes those with nerves of steel on a race to the sky.
Steel Dragon 2000 – Japan
Set up in Mie prefecture in Japan, the Steel Dragon 2000 is not only the longest roller coaster in Japan but also the longest on Earth. Nagashima Spa Land Amusement Park calls all 8,133 feet of the roller coaster home. Running for around 4 minutes, riders reach heights of over 300 feet. In addition to being the longest roller coaster in the world, Steel Dragon 2000 was also one of the most expensive to build, costing more than $50 million.
Shambhala – Spain
Perched in Salou, Spain, PortAventura theme park is home to the tallest roller coaster in Europe, Shambhala. This wild ride reaches a height of 249 feet with a series of camel back hills, pitch-black tunnels and even lakes. The mountain climbing themed rollercoaster is also one of the fastest roller coasters in the world.
Formula Rossa – Abu Dhabi
If a roller coaster must be fast for you to ride it, you need look no farther than the Formula Rosa. Located at Ferrari World in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, this ride accelerates like no other roller coaster. Said to be the faster roller coaster on Earth, Formula Rossa reaches speeds of 150 miles per hour in just five seconds. The entire ride plays on car racing while using some of the most famous racetracks in the world used for inspiration.
Kingda Ka – New Jersey
A featured roller coaster at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, New Jersey, Kingda Ka boasts of being the tallest and faster roller coaster in North America. While that title might be short lived, Kingda Ka doesn’t need the title to be tall and fast. Measuring 456 feet at its height point, the roller coaster goes from 0 to 128 miles per hour in 3.5 seconds. Should you choose to ride such a hair-raising ride you will also plummet down a 270-degree spiral. Rides travel 3,118 feet in 50.6 seconds.
