2010 was the safest year ever recorded for air travel.
Only one accident was reported for every 1.6 million flights made in western-built jets.
That number bests the one per 1.4 million reported in 2009, and is the lowest since records were first kept.
There were just 17 accidents reported in western-built jets in 2010, down from 19 in 2009.
IATA director-general Giovanni Bisignani said officials were happy with the safety improvement but stressed that they were not complacent. “Our target is zero,” Bisignani said, referring to the accident rate.
