The Double-Barreled Cannon

The Double-Barreled Cannon was an experimental cannon designed during American Civil War. It was built on a 17th century Italian concept in which cannon could be used to shoot twin cannonballs that were linked through a chain. However, some miscalculation on the designer’s part rendered the Double Barreled Cannon almost useless for all practical purposes. Ironically, the cannon still points in the northern direction to signify defiance against the Northern Yankee Forces against whom it was built to fight.

This famous tree in Athens is known as Jackson Oak and it stands in the place of the original tree that had fallen in 1942. This newer tree was grown from one of the acorns of its predecessor.

The Arch

University of Georgia is the oldest state-chartered university in the United States and is best known for its mid-19th century Arch. In its earliest days, it used to hinge gates to secure the campus. A 100-year old superstition forbids freshman to walk under the Arch or else they would never graduate from the university.
