Lying along the Gulf of Mexico, Veracruz is a large city in its eponymous state in the Central Mexico. The city’s inhabitants prefer to call it ‘Puerto’ (Port) to differentiate it from the state of Veracruz. The Port of Veracruz is famous for its nightlife and its spacious downtown that springs to life with Cuban music and dance on the weekends. The best time to visit Veracruz is in February when the atmosphere is particularly electric for the annual carnival celebrations.

San Juan de Ulua Castle (or Castle of San Juan de Ulua)
Made in 16th century, San Juan de Ulua Castle is the last fortress of the Spanish Empire that was later turned into a prison by the local government where prisoners, especially the political dissidents, were subjected to brutal tortures. It is open from Tuesday through Sunday, from 9 am to 5:30 pm and a guided tour here would cost you around 40 Pesos.
