The Church was built by Emperor Menelik II to commemorate the defeat of the Italians in Adwa in 1896. It is also dedicated to St. George (Ethiopia’s patron saint), whose icon was carried into the battle. The cathedral is amongst the most beautiful churches within the city. The exterior of the cathedral is covered with grey stone. Parts of its ceilings glow in skyblue and gilded stars. The paintings and mosaics by the renowned artist, Afewerk Tekle, cover the walls of the innermost shrine here.
