It\u2019s a good time to be alive if you\u2019re a\u00a0Star Wars<\/i>\u00a0fan. The\u00a0sci-fi\u00a0franchise, which\u00a0pretty much set the standard for summer blockbusters\u00a0with its first movie in 1978, has\u00a0(thanks to its new owner Disney)\u00a0returned\u00a0in a big way\u00a0to the cultural forefront in the\u00a0last few years. New movies! New characters!\u00a0And, of course, new destinations!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There\u2019s always been a\u00a0subtle but growing\u00a0link between\u00a0Star Wars<\/i>\u00a0and tourism. The exotic shooting locales for the original films\u00a0that were used to depict\u00a0planets in\u00a0a\u00a0galaxy far, far\u00a0away\u00a0more than likely\u00a0inspired additions to some\u00a0travel bucket lists, while the fervency of\u00a0the fanbase\u00a0undoubtedly\u00a0turned many of them into\u00a0pilgrimage\u00a0sites\u00a0and tourist\u00a0hot spots.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But what about the new movies? What are the destinations worth checking from the new trilogy and anthology films?\u00a0<\/span>Here are\u00a07 destinations from the new\u00a0Star Wars<\/i>\u00a0movies\u00a0you probably never\u00a0thought\u00a0existed\u00a0on planet Earth!\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Skellig\u00a0Michael, Ireland\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

This UNESCO World Heritage site\u00a0was\u00a0only\u00a0featured\u00a0briefly\u00a0in the final scenes of\u00a02015\u2019s\u00a0The Force Awakens<\/i>, <\/i>but\u00a0the\u00a0shooting location for\u00a0Luke Skywalker\u2019s\u00a0hideout was\u00a0a lot more prominent in\u00a02017\u2019s\u00a0The Last Jedi<\/i>.\u00a0Visitors\u00a0interested in exploring the\u00a0Skellig Michael\u00a0should plan their trips for between May and September\u00a0and can find a host of tour boat operators to take\u00a0them there\u00a0in\u00a0nearby fishing villages in\u00a0Kerry\u00a0County.\u00a0The island is home to\u00a0the ruins of a\u00a0monastery\u00a0that was abandoned in the 12th\u00a0century, which\u00a0you can visit (just be\u00a0prepared\u00a0to climb 600 steps\u00a0when you\u00a0get there), as well as plenty of\u00a0Atlantic Puffins (the inspiration for\u00a0Last Jedi<\/i>\u2019s\u00a0Porgs).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Wadi Rum, Jordan\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

The\u00a0sandy\u00a0vistas\u00a0of Wadi Rum\u00a0in Jordan<\/a>\u00a0are where you\u2019ll\u00a0find the\u00a0real-world\u00a0stand-in\u00a0for the\u00a0planet\u00a0Jedha, the desert moon\u00a0that\u00a0had once been a\u00a0holy site of\u00a0pilgrimage\u00a0and was occupied by the Empire\u00a0in\u00a0Rogue One<\/i>.\u00a0But\u00a0you\u2019ll\u00a0more likely\u00a0feel like you\u2019re on Mars,\u00a0since\u00a0the\u00a0desert valley\u2019s\u00a0rock formations\u00a0and\u00a0orangey\u00a0red\u00a0tones are quite\u00a0similar to\u00a0the\u00a0Red Planet\u2019s\u00a0landscape — a reason why so many other movies have also used it as a Mars double.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Laamu\u00a0Atoll, Maldives\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

If you\u2019ve seen\u00a0Rogue One<\/i>,<\/i>\u00a0you no doubt\u00a0recall the\u00a0beautiful\u00a0tropical\u00a0planet\u00a0Scarif, where the film\u2019s climatic battle was fought\u00a0amongst\u00a0palm trees and crystal blue water.\u00a0The scenes were filmed at\u00a0Laamu\u00a0Atoll, which\u00a0makes up part of the\u00a0Maldives\u00a0archipelago.\u00a0The Maldives<\/a>\u00a0is\u00a0a well-known dreamy\u00a0destination\u00a0and\u00a0there are so many different islands within the Maldives that\u00a0Laamu\u00a0Atoll isn\u2019t\u00a0commonly\u00a0flocked to\u00a0by\u00a0tourists. Thankfully,\u00a0wherever you go in the Maldives, the opulent scenery\u00a0will be close to what you\u2019ve seen in the film.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Salar\u00a0de Uyuni, Bolivia\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

It\u2019s probably the coolest filming location out of\u00a0the\u00a0new\u00a0Star Wars<\/em>\u00a0movies.\u00a0You\u2019ll recognize\u00a0Salar\u00a0de Uyuni\u00a0in Bolivia,\u00a0the world\u2019s largest\u00a0salt flat, as the\u00a0mineral planet\u00a0Crait\u00a0from\u00a0The Last Jedi<\/i>.<\/i>\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0where\u00a0the rebels make their stand against Kylo\u00a0Ren and the First Order. This prehistoric dried up lake is quite incredible. When the surface is dry it resembles\u00a0the moon, but\u00a0when\u00a0wet it\u2019s as if you’re walking on an endless mirror.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Did you notice the\u00a0black sand\u00a0in\u00a0the\u00a0background\u00a0of\u00a0many scenes in\u00a0Rogue\u00a0<\/i>One\u00a0(like when\u00a0Stormtroopers attack\u00a0Jyn\u00a0Eurso\u2019s\u00a0family)?\u00a0You may\u00a0have thought\u00a0it was created\u00a0with computers after filming, but actually, the<\/i> dramatic\u00a0scenes\u00a0were filmed\u00a0in Iceland<\/a>.\u00a0You can find this exact location and the black lava sand flats on the southern coast of Iceland, just east of the village of\u00a0V\u00edk.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If you happen to be passing through\u00a0this\u00a0busy London\u00a0Underground\u00a0station,\u00a0you may\u00a0find yourself\u00a0imagining\u00a0Stormtroopers running along the\u00a0train\u00a0platform.\u00a0Don\u2019t worry, it\u2019s perfectly fine!\u00a0A scene from\u00a0Rogue One<\/i>\u00a0was filmed here for the futuristic high-tech setting using the station’s escalators and silver\u00a0platform. Some wouldn\u2019t instantly think this location is where a scene from the movie was shot but once you recall the scene you may feel like a Stormtrooper yourself!\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Although the latest Star Wars\u00a0movie,\u00a0the Han Solo prequel simply titled\u00a0Solo: A Star Wars Story<\/i>, hasn\u2019t come out yet, we already know of at least one location from\u00a0filming that you can visit.\u00a0According to reports, some of the movie was filmed\u00a0on the breathtaking island of\u00a0Fuerteventura.\u00a0It\u2019s the second largest of the Canary Islands in Spain and is a popular destination for travelers thanks to its beautiful beaches surrounded by incredible coves and cliffs with perfect weather year-round.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
