If you were a pre-teen back in the 80s, then the words “Truffle\u00a0Shuffle,” “One-Eyed Willie,” and the fictitious neighborhood of the “Goon Docks”\u00a0are all probably still fresh in your mind. After all, how could you forget a classic movie like\u00a0The Goonies<\/em>? It was on June 7 back in 1985 that the revered flick was released\u00a0and in commemoration of 34 years of thrilling\u00a0audiences both young and old, we’re taking a closer look at some of the locations you can visit in Oregon to\u00a0relive scenes from the movie.<\/p>\n

The Walsh Family Residence in the “Goon Docks”<\/h2>\n

A lot of the movie was shot in Astoria, Oregon, and highlighted the city’s maritime history, Victorian architecture, and great natural beauty. Central to the story is the Astoria neighborhood that served as the “Goon Docks,” and an important part of which was the “Walsh Family residence,” the home\u00a0where The Goonies (Mikey and Brand Walsh, Data, Mouth, and Chunk) would meet up and hatch\u00a0new adventures. The home can still be visited by foot, but the community has discouraged visitors due to\u00a0littering, parking problems, and the general nuisance caused by the hundreds of die-hard fans coming through the quiet neighborhood. Instead of visiting, respect the privacy of the residents and view the home from Columbia Fields on Highway 30 near 36th Street instead.<\/p>\n

The old prison building in Astoria, Oregon<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n

Formerly the\u00a0Clatsop County Jail, the building is where Jake Fratelli escapes with the help of his mother and brother. The former jail has now become the Oregon Film Museum, dedicated to movies made in the state of Oregon. You’ll find costumes and memorabilia from The Goonies<\/em>, Kindergarten Cop<\/em>, Free Willy<\/em>, Twilight<\/em>, Sometimes a Great Notion<\/em>, and National Lampoon’s Animal House.\u00a0<\/em>Parked outside you can also take a cool picture alongside an SUV similar to the one used by the Fratelli gang in the movie, complete with bullet holes.<\/p>\n

Captain George Flavel House Museum<\/h2>\n

Featured in the movie as the museum where Mikey Walsh’s father works as a curator, this real-life house museum is on the National Register of Historic Places. It was built in 1885 by Capt. George Flavel, a Columbia River harbor\u00a0pilot who became one of the first millionaires in the area.<\/p>\n

Cannon Beach and Haystack Rock<\/h2>\n

In the movie, right after the Fratelli jailbreak, the criminal family’s SUV is chased by police through the streets of Astoria. The SUV finally escapes by mingling in with other vehicles taking part in the “Astoria ORV Rally” that’s taking place on Cannon Beach. Another notable landmark seen during the race scene is Haystack Rock, a 72-meter high vertical rock formation right off the beach.<\/p>\n

Ecola State\u00a0Park<\/h2>\n

Famous for its lush greenery and amazing views of the rocky coastline as well as its significance to the Lewis and Clark Expedition, Ecola State Park gets its fair share of visits from Goonie fans. The park was the location for many scenes in the movie. After The Goonies discover pirate One-Eyed Willie’s treasure map,\u00a0they are shown riding up the access road to the park. Later, Mikey’s brother Brand is pushed off the same road by his high school arch-enemy. The park has a couple of well-known vantage points in Ecola Point and Indian Beach — both of which feature in prominent scenes of the movie.<\/p>\n
