Vive la France<\/em>! Today is Bastille Day, which marks the day in 1789 when French citizens stormed the Bastille, a fortress in Paris used as an armory and prison for political prisoners. It\u2019s also noted as one of the seminal events in the early days of the French Revolution. Today, the celebrations are a point of French pride \u2014 a commemoration of their highly regarded ideals of libert\u00e9, \u00e9galit\u00e9, fraternit\u00e9. In France, as well as in cities with French connections across the world, the celebrations are a joyous affair\u2014often including free live music, loads of wine and cheese, and, of course, fireworks.<\/span><\/p>\n

Today is Bastille Day or La F\u00eate Nationale as its known in France. The holiday commemorates the start of the French Revolution which began in 1789 with the Storming of the Bastille, a fortress and prison. In modern times, the day’s most celebrated event is a military parade through Paris that begins at the Arc de Triomphe – seen in this Overview – and ends at Place de la Concorde.
