One of my favorite things to do when I lived in California was to head south of the border for the weekend.<\/p>\n

As I passed through Tijuana, I always took some time to savor the local flavors, and there was no better place to do that than on the street corner.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Here are some of my favorite street food items that can be found in Tijuana (and throughout Mexico and even parts of California).<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Bacon-wrapped hotdogs<\/strong>: There\u2019s something sinfully satisfying about a hotdog wrapped in sizzling bacon. This savory snack is the perfect antidote to the after effects of a night of drinking.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Tacos with avocado salsa<\/strong>: Of course, tacos are ubiquitous in Mexico. But there\u2019s nothing quite like the tacos I\u2019ve had in Tijuana— a corn tortilla with a large smear of avocado salsa, covered spiced beef and lightly dusted with diced onions and cilantro.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Fresh fruit with lime juice and chili<\/strong>: Anyone who\u2019s been to Mexico (or Southern California, for that matter) knows exactly what I\u2019m talking about here. Street vendors sell clear plastic bags full of chopped fresh fruit doused with lime juice and topped with a dash of chili powder. There\u2019s nothing quite as refreshing on a hot afternoon.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Corn on the cob with mayonnaise and chili powder<\/strong>: Don\u2019t knock it \u2018til you\u2019ve tried it. Roasted corn on the cob slathered with real mayonnaise (no Miracle Whip here) and sprinkled with chili powder is delicious. I\u2019ve even started eating it this way at my Midwestern summer picnics.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Whole coconuts (milk and meat)<\/strong>: One of my favorite sweet treats is whole coconut. Vendors chop of the top with a machete, allowing you to drink the flavorful milk before digging into the coconut meat with a spoon.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Buen provecho!<\/p>\n <\/p>\n
