The newly opened\u00a0Thinktank\u00a0Science Garden in\u00a0Birmingham offers visitors of all ages the chance to get \u2018bodies on\u2019 with\u00a0science through exciting and inventive features such as a 26 foot high clanging\u00a0\u201cTerminus\u201d machine and a human-sized hamster wheel.<\/span><\/p>\n

The first of its type and scale in the UK<\/a>, Thinktank is a place\u00a0to explore themes of energy, mechanics and transportation through three zones\u00a0and more than 40 exhibits, including a first ever logic-defying square wheeled\u00a0people wagon and a \u201cpulley me up\u201d machine. Here you can try your luck with an\u00a0\u201celastic squirt\u201d (a unique, specially commissioned water piston that uses\u00a0elastic potential energy) and crank up two fast-moving propellers to power a\u00a0merry-go-round, which links with Hurricane and Spitfire fighter planes already\u00a0on display in the main museum<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

All of these fantastic hands-on activities have been delivered\u00a0by a team of designers, engineers, building contractors, education experts,\u00a0science communications specialists and\u00a0<\/span><\/em>local\u00a0school children, who have spent more than 10,000 hours on the project since the\u00a0idea behind Thinktank Science Garden was hatched. The garden comes at an\u00a0exciting time for\u00a0Thinktank.\u00a0 The\u00a0museum joined forces with Birmingham’s Museums and Art<\/a> Gallery last year to\u00a0create the new Birmingham Museums Limited.<\/span><\/p>\n

It forms part of Birmingham’s larger Eastside City Park. This is\u00a0the first major new city centre park for Birmingham for over a century and thus\u00a0plays an important role in the regeneration and repositioning of the city\u00a0centre as a great destination.\u00a0Says Thinktank\u2019s Director of Learning and\u00a0Operations, Janine Eason, of the garden:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As a major addition to the existing museum, the\u00a0new\u00a0ThinktankScience Garden offers a fresh and exciting way of\u00a0experiencing firsthand how science and engineering have shaped Birmingham and\u00a0the world. After three years in development, we are eager to see the fun zones\u00a0and exhibits in action and look forward to welcoming visitors of all ages on\u00a0site.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

In addition, the Science Garden will host an engaging programme\u00a0of events and activities throughout the summer, including storytelling for\u00a0young children, arts and crafts sessions and big outdoor demonstrations.<\/span><\/p>\n
