You’ll definitely want to spend more than twenty-four hours here, but if that’s all you’ve got, here are my suggestions for where to stay, what to see, and what to savor.

Stay:
Hotel Saint Cecilia
112 Academy Dr, Austin, TX 78704
One of the most conceptual and beautiful hotels I’ve ever seen, Saint Cecilia was created in honor of the patron saint of music and poetry. The eclectic décor is inspired by the late 1960′s and early 1970′s rock and roll and beat poetry movements. The impressive Victorian structure that is now Hotel Saint Cecilia was originally built in 1888 as the Miller-Crockett house, and was occupied by a descendant of Davy Crockett (Leslie Crockett and his wife Mary Ann Miller) for over 60 years before it was converted into a Bed & Breakfast in the 1990s. The property underwent renovation and reopened as Hotel Saint Cecilia in 2008. Stay in an artistic room in the main building, or check into a dreamy poolside bungalow. Either way, you’re sure to wake up refreshed and inspired.

See:
The Texas State Capitol
1100 Congress Ave, Austin, TX 78701
Texas’s capitol building dates to 1888. It was designed in 1881, but it took seven years to complete the construction on this gorgeous and imposing structure. Of note is the rotunda (a whispering gallery), which features portraits of every person who has served as president of the Republic of Texas or governor of the State of Texas.

Savor:
Qui
1600 E 6th Street Austin, Texas 78702
The buzz-worthy Qui serves up creative and satisfying international cuisine (with a heavy Asian influence). The craft cocktails are as delicious as their names are delightful (try the “Art of Heartbreak” or the “American Slang”). Reservations are highly recommended if you plan on dining at this Austin “it” restaurant.

A dynamic and eclectic city that is steeped in history, Austin is one of the true gems of Texas.
