{"id":98880252,"date":"2015-09-21T09:00:00","date_gmt":"2015-09-21T09:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.onetravel.com\/travel-trends\/international-day-of-peace\/"},"modified":"2018-10-15T08:07:56","modified_gmt":"2018-10-15T12:07:56","slug":"international-day-of-peace","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.onetravel.com\/going-places\/international-day-of-peace\/","title":{"rendered":"International Day of Peace"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"International Day of Peace\" src=\"\/going-places\/wp-content\/uploads\/files\/2015\/9\/shutterstock_152004149.jpg\" alt=\"International Day of Peace\" width=\"450\" \/><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Today \u2013 September 21 \u2013 is\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/un.org\/en\/events\/peaceday.\" target=\"_blank\">International Day of Peace<\/a>, a date that the General Assembly of the United Nations has declared as a day \u201cdevoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples.\u201d And never in the 43 years that I\u2019ve been alive has the world more seemed to need a day dedicated to just that \u2026 for the whole world to stop, take a deep breath and just let each other be and give humanity the benefit of the doubt.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Isn\u2019t that one of the chief reasons we travel? To make connections with people we would not have had a chance to otherwise and to experience firsthand the realization that as different as other people living elsewhere may seem from afar, they\u2019re really a lot like you and me with the same basic motivations, hopes and concerns.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Maybe I\u2019m speaking more about myself here, projecting my own reasons to travel onto everybody else who\u2019s ever stepped foot outside their home. But, I\u2019m certain most folks who\u2019ve hit the road more than once would have to agree. For me, the best moments of a journey so often have been the encounters with strangers: when a misunderstanding turned to an opportunity to share a laugh, when misfortune was taken as the chance to better someone else\u2019s situation, when a wondrous moment was shared, when I made a new friend.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The overwhelmingly key lesson learned from the time I\u2019ve spent roaming round the planet has been that the golden rule is universal. Most people are good people. Beyond glowing sunsets, lavish feasts, occasional luxury, and the general exhilaration associated with being somewhere other than where I usually tend to be, it\u2019s the people who make a place special.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>I have no answers to solving global conflict, but I feel if more people aimed to interact positively with strangers on a more regular basis and allowed themselves to be a stranger themselves, then the world would be a much better, and more peaceful, place.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>So, an International Day of Peace? Celebrate it.
