{"id":5999,"date":"2011-06-11T10:00:00","date_gmt":"2011-06-11T10:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.onetravel.com\/travel-trends\/alternative-travel-magazines\/"},"modified":"2018-10-04T09:56:49","modified_gmt":"2018-10-04T13:56:49","slug":"alternative-travel-magazines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.onetravel.com\/going-places\/alternative-travel-magazines\/","title":{"rendered":"Alternative Travel Magazines"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There are so many great travel blogs out there (like OneTravel, of course) that sometimes I forget to check out print travel magazines.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Over the past year, I\u2019ve made a point to buy a few issues here and there to see what various travel magazines on the market have to offer.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While there are myriad mainstream travel magazines like <em>Cond\u00e9 Nast<\/em> and <em>Budget Travel<\/em> that I subscribe to and pour over each month, I decided to dedicate this post to two perhaps lesser-known alternative travel magazines, <em>Verge Magazine <\/em>and <em>Afar Magazine<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Be sure to check out their websites if you&#8217;re interested in subscribing.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I thoroughly enjoy the following two publications thanks to their unique missions, innovative content (on unexpected destinations, alternative travel experiences and little-known cultural aspects), and breathtaking photos.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vergemagazine.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Verge Magazine<\/a>: The mission of <em>Verge Magazine<\/em> is to inform readers about opportunities to experience meaningful travel. Verge\u2019s content focuses on educational travel and working and volunteering abroad. The editors and writers believe that \u201cinternational experience creates global citizens, who can change our planet for the better.\u201d Recent article topics include \u201cHow to Cope with Culture Shock\u201d, \u201cTaking Public Health to the Streets in Guatemala\u201d, and \u201cPicking up the Pieces in Haiti\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.afar.com\/businesses\/afar-media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Afar Magazine<\/a>: <em>Afar <\/em>provides wonderful suggestions for alternative travel (humanitarian travel, volunteer travel, eco travel) and inspiring cultural profiles and photos that will help to shape your travel philosophy. The magazine\u2019s mission is to \u201cinspire and guide those who travel the world seeking to connect with its people, experience their cultures and understand their perspectives.\u201d I especially enjoy the profiles of global travelers (entrepreneurs, social workers, health workers, writers, etc.) that are included in each issue.
