Earthquake Update: Washington Monument Closed Indefinitely, 9\/11 Memorial Moved"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\nMore than two weeks after a rare 5.8 magnitude earthquake rattled the East Coast, the Washington Monument in the Nation&rsquo;s Capital remains closed to visitors.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<p>\nAs the region regained its bearings on August 23, several large cracks were discovered near the top of the 127-year old obelisk.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<p>\nAccording to National Park Service officials, a damage survey from a structural engineering firm is still underway. Until the firm publishes a damage report, there&rsquo;s no telling how long it could take to repair the Monument and declare the structure safe for tourists.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<p>\nMeanwhile, more bad news came out of the capital Wednesday evening. A crane that was repairing earthquake damage at the National Cathedral collapsed.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<p>\nDue to the accident, a planned 9\/11 Memorial at the cathedral Sunday has been forced to move to the nearby Kennedy Center.
