Rome is home to some of Europe’s tastiest treats. Here are some of my favorite things you should definitely eat the next time you’re in Rome.

Antipasti (appetizers/dishes that are not pasta)

Pomodori con riso is a savory, yet not overly heavy, dish consisting of tomatoes filled with rice, baked and typically served with roasted potatoes. Another one of my favorites is fiori di zucca – zucchini flowers that are fried and then stuffed with anchovies and mozzarella cheese. Gnocchi alla Romana are rich dumplings made from semolina that are baked in butter and flavored with cheese and nutmeg. Filetti di baccala, deep-fried salted cod filet, is a popular Italian appetizer. Carciofi alla Giudia, another one of my favorites, is a simple dish consisting of perfectly friend artichokes that are tender on the inside and crunchy on the outside. Coda alla Vaccinara is oxtail stewed until tender and buttery, in savoury tomato sauce.

Pasti (pasta dishes)
Of course, it’s hard to go wrong with a traditional marinara or lasagna, but when in Rome, I opt for Pasta alla carbonara, a rich pasta dish featuring a sauce made from eggs, bacon, pecorino cheese, and black pepper. Another wonderful dish similar to pasta alla carbonara is pasta cacio e pepe, served in a creamy olive oil, pecorino cheese and black pepper sauce.

Dolci (desserts/sweets)
Imagine the best ice cream you’ve ever had – I would wager that gelato (Italian ice cream made with milk, cream, and sugar) is even better. You can’t go wrong with a scoop of dark chocolate and a scoop of raspberry. Another one of my favorite traditional treats is crostata di ricotta, cheesecake made with fresh ricotta and candied fruits. Maritozzi are sweet buns with raisins and candied orange peels that are often filled with fresh cream. And a dessert for wine lovers, ciambelle al vino are hard cookies that are meant to be dipped in wine at the end of a meal.

Buon appetito!
Don’t forget to ‘LIKE‘ us on Facebook!

There are plenty of historical sites, world class works of art, and romantic streets to explore in Rome… but don’t forget about the food!
