As much as it pains us to admit it, summer is coming to an end. But, it’s still not too late to get one last beach weekend in. Whether you’re hanging out with the family or escaping on a romantic getaway over Labor Day weekend, here are some suggestions for great beaches around the US where you can spend the last weekend of summer 2016!
Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
A popular vacation spot year-round, Myrtle Beach never disappoints on Labor Day weekend. Make sure you bring your appetite to the annual Beach, Boogie & BBQ Festival. Held every Labor Day weekend, the three-day event features free beach music concerts, water sports demonstrations, a mini art fair, and lots of food vendors. The highlight of the weekend is Saturday’s barbecue competition, where you can watch over 75 pit masters compete to take home this year’s title as the best in the state!
Daytona Beach, Florida
One of the highlights of spending Labor Day weekend in Daytona Beach is attending the races at the Daytona International Speedway. Of course, if racecars aren’t your thing, there are plenty of other ways to spend your last summer weekend. Lounge on the beach, eat your fill of seafood, attend the Bruce Springsteen tribute and fireworks show, or check out the Island Rum Festival on Main Street (the last two events both take place on the evening of September 3).
San Diego, California
The array of Labor Day weekend activities in San Diego is as dazzling as the southern California beach city itself. During the US Sand Sculpting Challenge and Dimensional Art Exposition, master sand sculptors from around the world converge to build unbelievable creations for the public to enjoy. That same weekend, the Barona Band of Mission Indians host their annual weekend pow wow including a dance competition, camping, and traditional foods. Of course, there are plenty of beaches to choose from if you’re looking for a little fun in the sun.
Galveston Island, Texas
Not only is Galveston Island one of the most beautiful beach cities in the US, it’s also a great place to visit for Labor Day weekend. Simply strolling Galveston’s historic main street and grabbing a bite to eat is a great option. Over Labor Day weekend, you can taste craft beer from all over the state at the Brewmaster’s Festival. For some wet n’ wild fun, head to the Schlitterbahn Waterpark Galveston Island to experience water slides with names like Loopy Luge, Boogie Bahn, and the Faust Und Furious.
Cannon Beach, Oregon
The rugged coastal beauty of Oregon’s Cannon Beach provides the perfect backdrop for a low-key Labor Day weekend getaway. Hike and take in some of the area’s stunning views, lounge near the water with a good book, or get to know locals and visitors at the Sunday night weenie roast. You can also head into town to experience unique art galleries, wine tasting, and an array of delightful independently owned eateries.
