There's a range of things you can do on the Big Island that has nothing to do with its beaches.
The scenery is as captivating as it is amazing. Flocks of birds of various species are all around you and natural phenomena abound. I saw an owl land on a fence right beside my car at 8:00 am. A wild turkey peeked into the garden and claimed it as its own. A rainbow appeared over a black and dreary lava field and, suddenly, it seemed almost attractive. To travel on boat to where searing lava meets the sea is the experience of a lifetime. You can hike down onto the surface of a now frozen lava lake inside a dormant volcano. You can walk through a tropical jungle on the east side of the island or opt for the arid landscape of the west side. A very satisfactory trip that you can really tailor to your needs.
Great Island to Explore

This is a fantastic island to explore! Going up to the crater rim and exploring the rain forest is awesome. A jeep is recommended to get to the green sand beach. If you hike as we did bring water and snack or lunch as it takes about an hour each way.The Atlantis Sub ride was fun and informative. Can not wait to go back and explore the Hilo side of island.
