Virgin Nigeria Airways (VK) was Nigeria's flagship carrier that had its operating base located at Murtala Muhammed International Airport. When in operation, the airline was counted among the largest airlines in Nigeria and covered more than 18 destinations worldwide. Some of the famous destinations that the airline covered were London, Dubai, Accra, Dakar, Port Harcourt, Benin City and many more. The airline was owned by the Virgin Atlantic and Nicon Group and had a fleet of more than 12 aircrafts which included collection of Boeing 737-300 and Airbus A330-200.
In June 2012, Virgin Nigeria Airways was grounded by the safety regulators for inspection of the quality standards that were being followed. On September 10, 2012, the airline ceased all its domestic and international operations after terming its employees as disloyal, citing breach of trust as one of the main reasons that prompted this move.
